About me
Hi,
I have been involved in the sports and health & fitness industry since the mid 90's, first as a professional cyclist, then personal trainer and powerlifting coach in Northern Ireland.
Just moved to Brisbane, Australia in August 2011.

Discovered Kettlebell by idle curiosity to see if and how it could help my 3rd AC separation in 2009... I quickly discovered it had a lot to offer rather than just being a cannon ball with a handle!

Fallen in love with the strength endurance possibilities with kettlebells and despite having years worth of scar tissue and injuries from cycling and other ill-informed choices i,m steadily making progress.

I have taken the leap and signed up to take the RKC this year in Melbourne so let the training commence.

I'm pretty new to this forum and it's great to read all your opinions.

To be honest, having been in the entertainment business that is the modern fitness industry, a lot of the times the trainer is under pressure to continuously reinvent the wheel. For the average client they expect new, exciting exercises to 'melt' away their love handles! The PTs do of attempt to keep on top of 'trends' as they mostly see them and 'attend' 1 day courses here and there and maintain their CECs!!!! The quality of the teaching at these courses is generally poor and embarrassing having attended a couple when I had to (in the UK so I can't generalise regarding the Au quality but I assume....) The course providers are feeding off the CEC thing and sure why not, they have to make money!

In the UK I worked (manager and head coach) at a gym where we did not follow the industry slaves and we did our thing. We did not join the FIA and other fitness industry boards et al. We taught exercise using all the usual equipment but we didn't attend courses to learn more about these, we went to guys and galls who where in the trenches. Weight Lifting coaches, Powerlifting Coaches and spent many evenings learning the ropes and this is where I firmly believe instructors can learn and should learn new skills.

Apart from the poor teaching quality on courses there is the growing problem of the internet where you can view any exercise which may be perfectly demonstrated but who's to say the watcher can perform it and understand it and its nuances, correctives, regressions and progressions!

This is is just life. There will always be copycats, always be know-it-alls and knuckle headed meat heads who KNOW how to use a kettle ball (I was talking to a coach who charges $300 an hour in sydney for PT, tell me about his kettleBALL classes!!!!!).

The role of a good coach is teach clients how to get stronger, safely for whatever their goals and i'd like to see client education develop so they understand that they don't have to change things up every session.

I think the saying "keep it simple stupid" says it all and should be repeated and shared daily.

I just use my iPhone app, 'Seconds Pro'.

You can set up your own intervals in a matter of seconds and even set your playlist should you want some choons to swing to

For real. I'm really worried about the snatch or pull ups and I'm wondering what exactly the other 2.95 hours have in store! Thinking dense workouts of presses, carries, long swing sets and lovely squats with a side serving of dozens of get ups.
Any insight into whats normal of the 2.95 days after the tests, if indeed it can be labled normal!?

Great stuff. Is there any guide level for progression? Say for example in the early stages, i.e. now, could a trainee work with snatching a 20 to build up the endurance / density of work in 5+ minutes? Would there be a target time that would dictate "yeah, time to move to the 24k"? I have intermittent problems with golfers elbow so I like to keep my options open to train around what my elbows allow for!
I'm thinking of doing a longer snatch session with the 20 once a week and a shorter session with a 24. I've been tempted to use the 28 but I'm thinking it'll be a waste of time owing to it being irrelevant!
Ive read all the recommended reading but just wondering about the transition from the 20 to the 24. I can snatch the 20 very comfortably in 4:20

    Peace,
    J

Spent January completing the 10,000 swing challenge. Was definitely many many more swings per day than I was used to but I ended it on the 29th January. I used from a 20 up to a 32kg kettlebell.
However, a couple of days after completing it I started to get tightness and aches in my left calf, not much in my right calf though! It doesn't go into achilles tendon so I've ruled out achilles tendoniti
